Rah rah siss boom blah: Awful "Fired Up" is definitely nothing to cheer about
This teenage sex comedy is well made but has a depraved, abhorrent center. The fact that the movie is so well made is the greatest danger. The movie assumes that teenagers will have multiple sex partners, both heterosexual and homosexual. To keep the PG rating, the sex scenes are implied and not depicted. Instead of overt nudity, the nude scenes are cleverly staged with male characters having strategic pom poms.
Aside from its jokes about George W. Bush's alleged drug use and the presence of Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" on the soundtrack,. Most of the necessary ingredients are in place: hormonally driven high school boys, brainless cheerleaders, sneering snobs, dim-witted authority figures and painfully broad caricatures of gays, lesbians and African-Americans. But, unlike those movies, "Fired Up" has a PG rating and almost no erotic content. Like many a teenage Romeo, it's all dirty talk and no action.
